RESIDENCE – THE OLD BELL HOTEL

Location: Abbey Row, Malmesbury, United Kingdom SN16 0AG

Small Description: The Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury is one of the most unique and outstanding Cotswold hotels. Standing across the road from a old abbey ruin, it is reputed to be England’s oldest hotel. The boutique like building has an impressive history of exceptional hospitality, dating back to 1220. This building has also been famous for being the most haunted hotel in the Cotswolds. Many paranormal investigators have succeeded in concluding that there is, in fact, evidence of ghosts in and around the structure. There are multiple rooms at this historic hotel that are extremely haunted, which gives you more of a chance of seeing something creepy when you stay over the night.

Ghost Story: One of the most weirdest accounts took place in and around The Foe Room. Residents returning to their room, were somewhat surprised when they were unable to gain access. Although the door could be unlocked, it could only be opened a fraction. Staff were called but they too failed to budge the door. With no other course of action left, a ladder was fetched and propped up outside and beneath the bedroom window. A member of staff climbed the ladder up to the window, which was securely fastened, the only way in was to smash the glass. Once inside, the staff member was stunned to see that a heavy wooden wardrobe had been manoeuvred against the door, nobody else was in the room.

Another ghostly account was about a boy that had bad asthma. He was the son of the man that had the responsibility of being the landlord at the time. It was in the 1930’s when the man heard his son suffering from a massive asthma attack from the other side of the hotel. As he ran to his sons room and opened the door, he witnessed a lady dressed in a garment who was helping him by patting his back. As the landlord entered, the mysterious lady disappeared before his very eyes. Days later after pondering the situation the man realised that the clothing the lady was wearing was from the 18th century era.

Bonus Spook: One of the most commonly seen ghosts at the hotel is that of the Grey Lady, who is often seen in the James Ody room by residents and staff alike. She is described as often looking forlorn and melancholy and glides silently around the hotel. There’s also a spooky myth associated with the Grey Lady – it’s said that if the words “Grey Lady” are spoken out loud three times within the James Ody room, then she will appear.
